CHAPTER 16

“Why would someone want to murder him?” Luna asked.

“Actually, no, that’s not what I meant,” Skye said. “But that’s also an important question.”

Fred sipped his tea and nodded thoughtfully. “Isn’t it the three M’s or something?” He knitted his eyebrows. “Motive, means, and opportunity.”

Bob hopped up onto the arm of his chair. “Except that’s MMO.”

“As Douglas Adams said, ‘beauty is truth, and truth beauty’.” Fred waved his hand. “Three Ms is more beautiful; ergo, it must be true.”

Before Skye could argue against such silly logic, Luna spoke.

“The opportunity won’t help much.” Luna placed her empty cup on the coffee table. “Anyone who was at the house could have done it.”

“That’s true,” Jimmy said. “But I think we can safely eliminate anyone who wasn’t there. I mean, unless we’re dealing with a ghost, right, Bob?”

Bob shot him a side-eye. “I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss it. There are more things in this world than we can easily explain.”

“I think you’re right, Jimmy,” Dina said, ignoring Bob. “The most logical flow of events is that the victim had the anaphylactic reaction first and then was injected with adrenaline.”

Folding her knees, Skye tapped on the side of the chair. “That leaves us with six people because the guards only entered the house afterwards.”

Fred rubbed his hands. “Six is good. Send me their names, and I’ll run a deep background check.”

“You won’t—”

“Skye, darling, I’m good at this stuff.” Fred wagged his eyebrows. “You wouldn’t believe the shenanigans people get up to on social media. What seems hilarious in a moment of blissful inebriation can haunt you all the way to your next job interview.”

Given the way he winced at the end, Skye wondered if Fred was speaking from personal experience.

“The vampires are pretty secretive, though,” Luna said.

“They are,” Fred said with a sly smile, “but those around them? Not so much. Even the most secretive bloodsuckers can’t hide everything behind their mansion walls.”

“No name-calling,” Skye said firmly.

She might not trust vampires, but they were still beings. Seb’s face surfaced in her mind; those deep brown eyes held a thousand secrets, layered with something rare—a warmth and quiet intelligence she didn’t usually associate with his kind. He was nothing like the other vampires she’d met, with their cold, predatory gaze and razor-sharp smiles. Seb seemed… softer somehow. Thoughtful. Very unlike any vampire she’d ever encountered—or anyone else, for that matter. There was an unspoken depth to him, a sense that he carried both light and darkness within him, and it intrigued her in ways she wasn’t quite ready to admit.

“Yes, let’s be nice to the bloo—vampires,” Bob said, hopping from foot to foot. “Because the only thing scarier than an angry vampire is… a hangry one.”

Skye glared at Bob.

“What? It’s true.” Bob puffed up. “You don’t want to face a vampire before they’ve had their morning… whatever it is they drink.”

Unfolding her legs, Skye took out her phone and typed into it. “I’ve sent you the names, Fred.”

Dina stood, gathering everyone’s cups onto the tray.
